How to Clean Fine Jewellery

Every day we use many products such as hand soap, lotion, conditioner, cooking ingredients

etc. that leave residue on our jewellery, especially our rings. This reside mixed with dirt and

dust leaves jewellery dull and can damage the metal over time. Cleaning fine jewellery is a

crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the piece as well as its lustre and sparkle.

Personally, I take my rings off to cook and shower and I wash them about once every couple

weeks or whenever they’re starting to look dull. There are many products that you can buy

that’re made especially for cleaning jewellery, however, I find the following technique works

best!

Please note this method should NOT be used for pearls.

What you need:

Dish soap, a cup, hot water, a teaspoon, a soft toothbrush, a sieve

Method:

1. Pour about a tablespoon of dish soap into the cup.

2. Heat tap as hot as it gets and fill the cup the rest of the way with the hot water.

3. Place the ring so its resting over the bowl on the neck of the spoon

4. Place in hot water, give it a little mix and leave for at least 10 minutes

5. Dip the brush in the soapy water and brush all over the jewellery, being careful not

to drop it.

6. Place sieve in the sink and turn tap back as hot as it goes. Wash your jewellery

thoroughly with the running tap water

7. Dry thoroughly and check that no stones have come loose or fallen out. If any have

fallen out check the sieve carefully as it should have caught anything that had been

loose!

8. Admire your beautiful jewellery and enjoy wearing it!
